X-Ray It — Media Diagnostic Tool

X-Ray It is a free media diagnostics tool built by Menu Magik for digital signage operators. Upload any image or video file and get an instant technical report — codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio streams, and a plain-English verdict on whether the file is ready for signage playback or needs attention.

No login, no registration, no payment required.

What X-Ray It Does

X-Ray It analyzes files before you upload them to Menuboard Manager or push them to a screen. It catches compatibility problems early — wrong codec, unusual frame rate, oversized file, corrupt container — so you're not debugging a blank screen at the location.

Key capabilities:

  • Instant technical readout: codec, resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, bitrate, audio streams, duration, file size

  • Plain-English verdict on signage compatibility

  • Analyze up to 5 files at once for side-by-side comparison

  • Re-encode any video to clean H.264/AAC MP4 at 1080p or 4K directly in the browser

  • Export a PDF diagnostic report to share with clients or vendors

The Verdict System

Q: What do the X-Ray It verdict ratings mean? A: Every file gets one of three verdicts:

  • Healthy — No issues detected. Safe to upload and deploy.

  • Warning — The file is likely playable, but has a potential compatibility concern. Common warnings include non-standard frame rate, very high bitrate, H.265/HEVC codec (limited hardware decode support on some players), or YUV 4:4:4 chroma subsampling. The file may work fine, but it's worth reviewing before deploying to all screens.

  • Problematic — The file will likely fail to play on signage hardware. Common causes include professional editing codecs (ProRes, DNxHD, CineForm, RAW video) that are not supported by browser or signage player decoders, no video stream found, or a corrupt/unreadable container.

Supported File Types

Video: MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WebM, WMV, FLV, MPEG Image: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, BMP, TIFF, SVG, HEIC

Maximum file size: 500 MB per file.

How to Use It

  1. Go to X-Ray It.

  2. Drag your file onto the drop zone, or click to browse and select it. You can drop up to 5 files at once.

  3. X-Ray It analyzes the file immediately and displays the results below the drop zone.

  4. Review the verdict and the technical details. If the file shows a Problematic or Warning verdict, read the flags listed — they describe exactly what the issue is.

  5. If the file needs re-encoding, scroll to the Export section of the result card, choose 1080p or 4K and your desired frame rate, and click Export. X-Ray It re-encodes the video to H.264/AAC MP4 and downloads it to your computer.

Re-Encoding Problem Files

If a file comes back Problematic — typically because it uses a professional codec like ProRes or DNxHD that signage players can't decode — X-Ray It can re-encode it to a compatible format without any additional software.

From the result card, use the export controls to select resolution (1080p or 4K) and frame rate (1–120 fps, typically 30 fps for signage), then click Export. The re-encoded file downloads as [original name]_[resolution]_[fps]fps.mp4, ready to upload to Menuboard Manager.

Access and Pricing

X-Ray It is completely free. No account, no registration, no payment required — just upload a file and go.
