BrightSign — Setup & Firmware Management

Initial Setup

  1. Power the BrightSign off.

  2. Remove the SD card.

  3. Insert the SD card into your PC.

  4. Format the SD card as FAT32.

  5. Download the setup files — contact Menuboard Manager support if you don't have them.

  6. Unzip the file, open the folder, and copy all files.

  7. Paste the files onto the SD card, then eject it from your PC.

  8. Insert the SD card into the BrightSign.

  9. Hold both the RST and SRV buttons, power the unit on while holding them, and release when you see the amber LED flash.

  10. The firmware update will run — an orange progress bar appears on-screen.

  11. Setup will run and the unit will reboot several times.

  12. When complete, an Installation Complete screen appears.

  13. In Menuboard Manager, go to Units Manager — the unit will be listed there.

  14. Provision the unit: give it a name, then select the location and sign.

  15. Click Reload App to push content to the display.

WiFi Configuration

Only WiFi-enabled BrightSign devices support wireless connectivity — these models typically have a visible antenna. Check your hardware before proceeding.

Initial WiFi Setup

BrightSign units must be initially provisioned over a wired connection. Once the unit is registered on BSN.cloud, you can push the WiFi configuration remotely.

  1. Register the BrightSign on BSN.cloud.

  2. Connect the BrightSign to a wired network.

  3. Power on the BrightSign.

  4. Open BA Connected and connect to the BrightSign.

  5. Go to the SD Card tab.

  6. Rename the existing autorun.brs file to backup-autorun.brs.

  7. Download the autorun.brs file provided by Menuboard Manager support.

  8. Open the file in a text editor and add your WiFi credentials:

    • essid = "Your SSID"

    • pass = "your password"

  9. Upload the updated autorun.brs to the BrightSign SD card via BSN.cloud.

  10. Reboot the BrightSign from the Control tab.

Updating WiFi Settings

Use this procedure when the WiFi network name or password has changed on an already-provisioned BrightSign.

Caution: Incorrectly modifying the SD card can cause it to malfunction. A failed card requires a new SD card and a full initial setup. Using BrightAuthor Connected to update the file remotely is strongly recommended over the physical method below.

Option A: Via BrightAuthor Connected (Recommended)

  1. Connect to the BrightSign in BA Connected.

  2. Go to the SD Card tab.

  3. Download the current autorun.brs file and make a backup copy.

  4. Edit the file, updating essid and pass with the new WiFi credentials.

  5. Upload the updated file back to the SD card.

  6. Reboot the BrightSign from the Control tab.

Option B: Physical SD Card Method

  1. Power off the BrightSign.

  2. Remove the SD card by pressing it in until it pops out.

  3. Insert the SD card into your computer's SD card reader.

  4. Open autorun.brs in a text editor (VS Code, Notepad, etc.).

  5. Update only the WiFi values:

    • essid = "Your SSID"

    • pass = "your password"

  6. Save the file, then eject the SD card using your operating system's eject function — do not simply remove it.

  7. Reinsert the SD card into the BrightSign, ensuring it is fully seated.

  8. Power on the BrightSign.

Firmware Downgrade

Use this procedure if you need to roll back a BrightSign unit to an earlier firmware version. BrightAuthor Connected (BA:Connected) is recommended — use the browser version.

  1. Log in to BSN.cloud.

  2. Go to the Network tab.

  3. Click the gear icon for the unit you want to downgrade.

  4. Go to the Advanced tab.

  5. In the BS OS Update section, click Custom URL.

  6. Paste in the firmware URL provided by support.

  7. Click Update.

The unit downloads the firmware, then reboots and installs it. After the unit restarts, confirm the firmware version in the Info tab.

Installing an SD Card in a MIMO Monitor with BrightSign

  1. Power the MIMO monitor off using the switch on the bottom of the unit.

  2. Gently push the SD card in on the bottom of the unit to release it.

  3. Remove the SD card.

  4. Install the new SD card.

  5. Power the MIMO monitor back on.

  6. Wait for the unit to reboot and go through a setup process.

  7. You will see a message on-screen — "Installing Partner Application" — if the update is proceeding successfully.

  8. When the update is complete, an activation screen displays a registration code.

  9. Go to osmsolutions.com and initiate a support chat to activate the MIMO monitor or to get help from the Support Team.
